Tony Hall is a British television executive who began his career at the BBC in 1973 as a trainee. He rose through the ranks, becoming head of BBC News in 1996 and then director of BBC News and Current Affairs in 2001. He left the BBC in 2013 to become chief executive of the Royal Opera House, before returning to the BBC in 2013 as director general.
